Why is stone so desired?

Maybe, because it inspires us, and to some extent fulfills some of our desires for the eternal.

Were not the pyramids of Egypt, the castles and palaces of most rulers of the time down through the history made out of stone?

The haves of the time (past and present) were able to satisfy to a certain extent their desire for longevity, through their stonework projects.

Even though nothing is ever lasting as we remember the earthquake in Japan, the symbolism expressed through stone works fulfills in us a minute part of that desire for the eternal.

Our stones for the most part are lightweight, and in case of a calamity would not create the damage the heavyweights would do.
